LEAD

Collection:

Specimen:  Blood

 

Container:  Lavender, Sodium Heparin Green (no gel) or Dark Blue Top Tube with EDTA.  
Due to possible environmental contaminants, blood specimens submitted for lead testing must be collected in a separate tube or microtainer when requesting multiple tests. Specimens may not be shared with other areas of the laboratory.
Note:  Capillary collection (fingerstick) is acceptable for initial screening and for follow-up tests if initial blood lead were <3.5 mcg/dL.  All follow-up blood lead testing on patients with elevated blood lead levels > 3.5 mcg/dL should be performed by venous collection.

 

Volume:  5 mL ; Min 1 mL

Pediatric Collection:

One lavender microtainer filled to 500 uL.

Storage Instructions:

Specimens are stable 2 weeks refrigerated.  DO NOT CENTRIFUGE SPECIMEN.

Turnaround Time (TAT):

Results reported on day of testing.

Test Availability:

Twice per week, days may vary
