Collection:
Specimen: Blood
Container: Serum Separator (preferred), Plain Red or Green Lithium Heparin with gel.
Volume: 3 mL; Minimum 1 mL
Note: Recommended collection time is 7:30am - 12 noon.
Pediatric Collection:
Two Gold, Green or Red microtainers filled to 600 uL.
Storage Instructions:
Serum should be separated from red cells when stored or shipped. Specimens that cannot be tested immediately can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. For storage beyond 24 hours, specimens should be frozen.
Turnaround Time (TAT):
Results reported on day of testing.
Test Availability:
Performed twice per week, days may vary
Reference Interval:
2.6 - 18.5 mU/mL in healthy individuals with a normal hematocrit.
Interpretive Data:
Erythropoietin (EPO) is measured by a solid phase, chemiluminescent immunometric assay (Access II, Beckman Coulter, Inc.). Results by other assays should not be used interchangeably due to differences in analytical methods.
The EPO concentration in normal individuals can be affected by altitude, pregnancy and other factors.
