Reflex to Urine Bacterial Culture if indicated by lab protocol.

Specimen:
Urine, Random (2  samples)

Containers:
Submit TWO tubes: (1) BD Urinalysis Preservative tube (Yellow/Red Tiger top-must be filled to the indicated line) or 10 mL Yellow Top Plastic Urine No Additive Tube BD#364979 for Urinalysis
*AND*
(1) BD Urine Culture tube BD Vacutainer Plus C&S Boric Acid Sodium Borate/Formate Tube (Grey top)

Volume:

  • For UA-Minimum 8 mL in BD Urinalysis Preservative tube (Yellow/Red Tiger top). If unable to collect 8 mL, collect at least 1.5 mL in a Yellow Top Plastic Urine No Additive Tube BD#364979
  • For Urine Culture if reflexed-Fill BD Urine culutre tube (grey) to line on label; or 1 mL minimum in Sterile Container (separate sample from UA)

Stability:

URINALYSIS:

   Unpreserved (sterile container):

  • Room Temperature: 30 minutes
  • Refrigerated: 24 hours
  • Frozen: Unaccpetable

  UA Preservative Tube (Tiger Top):

  • Room Temperature: 8 hours
  • Refrigerated: 24 hours
  • Frozen: Unacceptable

  Any specimen over 24 hours old will not be accepted.

 

URINE CULTURE:

  Unpreserved (sterile container): 

  • Ambient:  2 hrs;
  • Refrigerated:  24 hrs;
  • Frozen:  Unacceptable 

   BD Urine culture tube (Gray top w/preservative): 

  • Ambient/Refrigerated:  48 hrs
  • Frozen:  Unacceptable

Reflex Criteria

Reflex to culture will occur if any one of the following urinalysis criteria is met:

  • Nitrite: Positive
  • Leukocyte Esterase: > 25 leu/uL
  • Bacteria: > Few
  • WBC: > 3 /HPF

Turnaround Time (TAT):

Urinalysis:

  • STAT: 1 HOUR
  • Routine: 3 HOURS

Microbiology:

  • 24 – 48 hours for preliminary positive cultures.
  • Negative reports after 24 – 36 hours.
