Test Code LAB473 Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1/2 Antibody and HIV-1 Antigen
Additional Codes
HIV
Notes:
The inhouse HIV test screens for HIV-1 p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 (groups M and O) and HIV-2. If the HIV 1/2 Antibody screen is reactive, a repeat assay is performed. If the HIV 1/2 Antibody screen is repeatedly reactive, the HIV-1 HIV-2 Differentiation assay will be performed for confirmation. An additional charge will apply.
Collection:
Specimen: Blood
Container: SST (Preferred) or Red Top
Specimen Volume: 7 mL; Minimum 3 mL
Pediatric Collection:
Two SST, or Red Top microtainers filled to 600 uL.
Stability:
Separate serum from gel/cells within 4 hours of collection. Once serum is separated from cells:
Ambient: 8 Hours
Refrigerated (preferred): 1 Week
Frozen: 2 Weeks
Turnaround Time (TAT):
STAT: 2 HOURS
Routine: 3 HOURS
Test Availability:
Daily / 24 Hours / Available STAT
Performing Laboratory Section:
Chemistry / UMC MAIN LABORATORY
Reference Interval:
Nonreactive
Interpretive Data:
Nonreactive: Negative for HIV-1 antigen and HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies. No laboratory evidence of HIV infection. If acute HIV-1 infection is suspected then follow-up testing for HIV-1 RNA ( EPIC LAB919) is recommended.
Reactive: Presumptive evidence of HIV-1 p24 Ag and/or HIV-1/HIV-2 Ab. Confirmation to follow.
The performance of this assay has not been established for individuals younger than 2 years of age. Nearly all infants born to HIV-infected mothers passively acquire maternal antibody and, in some cases, will test antibody positive until age 18 months regardless of whether they are infected. Definitive diagnosis of HIV infection in early infancy requires other assays, including HIV nucleic acid tests or viral culture.
