Notes:

For NP swabs: Insert the swabs into the posterior nasopharynx and hold them there for 15 to 30 seconds or until the patient coughs

For NP aspirates: Use a flexible catheter and a sputum (DeLee) trap

Unacceptable Conditions: Calcium-alginate swabs.

Collection:

Specimen: Nasopharyngeal swabs, nasal aspirates and BAL

Container: Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs and nasal aspirates – Universal Transport Media on ice.  Submit BAL in sterile container

Volume: 4 mL; Minimum 1 ml  

Storage Instructions:

Specimen is stable for refrigerated 2 days and frozen 2 weeks.

Turnaround Time (TAT):

Results reported same day as performed.

Interpretive Data:

The assay methodology is real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the Cepheid SmartCycler and the primer sequence specific for the B. pertussis IS481 gene. This test will not detect B. parapertussis; if clinically warranted, please contact Lab Client Services at 792-0707 for specimen collection instructions to be sent out to a reference lab.
