Specimen: Blood
Container: Lavender Top Tube on ice. Collect separate tubes when multiple tests are ordered.
Volume: 4 mL; Minimum 2 mL
Stability:
On-campus collections: Place on ice immediately after collection.
Off-campus collections: Charleston area clinics - Place specimen immediately on ice or on a cold pack (not frozen) and keep in a refrigerator until transport. Transport refridgerated to UHE Main Fast Flow Lab. If specimen cannot be delivered within 6 hours, centrifuge and pour off plasma into a transport tube labeled with specimen type (EDTA plasma). Freeze poured off specimen immediately. Transport frozen to UHE Main Fast Flow Lab.
Outside RHNS and clinics: Immediately centrifuge and pour off plasma into a transport tube labeled with specimen type (EDTA plasma). Freeze poured off specimen immediately. Transport frozen to UHE Main Fast Flow Lab.
Once plasma is separated from cells:
Refrigerated: 2 Weeks
Frozen: 1 Year
Turn Around Time (TAT):

Routine: 4 HOURS
