A negative result in serum or BAL does not exclude the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis. A single positive result on serum or BAL must be accompanied by clinical symptoms to support a diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis.  Serial sampling is recommended for monitoring immunocompromised patients. Cow's milk and certain products of fungal fermentation contain galactomannan which, after ingestion, can cause false positive results.  Parenteral administration of Plasma-Lyte and the antibiotic piperacillin/tazobactam can cross react with this assay causing false positive results.
