Notes:
Special medium is required. Obtain Thayer Martin or Martin Lewis (selective) medium from the Microbiology Lab (843-792-0707).
The physician must inoculate directly onto the plate in a serpentine streak.
N. gonorrhoeae is extremely fastidious; make certain the plate is not dried out or expired. Do Not Refrigerate!

Specimen: Cervical, vaginal, urethral, rectal or throat.
Container: Martin Lewis or Thayer Martin agar
Storage/Transport Temperature:
Keep specimen at Room Temperature; do not refrigerate.
Storage Instructions:
Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable.
Turnaround Time (TAT):
Positive cultures are reported in 24-72 hours. Negative cultures are reported after 48 hours.
