Important Note

Inpatients Only: GI Panel orders are only acceptable within the first 48 hours of inpatient admission and only once within 14 days.

  • If you attempt to sign a GI PCR order that does not meet appropriateness criteria, a warning will display, and the order cannot be signed.
  • LAB15565 Pre-Authorization GI PCR will need to be ordered. Providers will fill in the reasons for requesting an exception to the GI PCR restriction before signing the order. Insufficient detail may result in the order being cancelled. 
  • Diagnostic Stewardship will review this order and the provided reason for exception. Test will be performed only if approved, and turnaround time will be delayed. Approval or denial will be communicated within 2 business days via Epic secure chat.

The Gastrointestinal Panel (GI Panel) detects the following organisms:

 

Bacteria: Campylobacter, Clostridium difficile, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella, Yersinia entercolitica, Vibrio, Vibrio cholera, Diarrheagenic E. coli/Shigella including EAEC Enteroaggreative E.coli, EPEC Enteropathogenic E. coli, ETEC, Enterotoxigenic E. coli, Shiga toxin producing E. coli, (STEC and E.coli 0157), Shigella/Enteroinvasive E.coli EIEC.

 

Protozoa: Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia

 

Viruses: Adenovirus 40/41, Astrovirus, Norovirus G I and G II, Rotavirus and Sapovirus.

Notes:

Specimen should be liquid or semisolid.

Unacceptable/Rejected Specimens:

  • Stool older than 24 hours since passage
  • Formed stool - For exceptions, call 843-792-2123, Pager# 14463
  • Specimens submitted on inpatients admitted longer than 2 days (day of admission and day after admission)-For exceptions, call 843-792-2123, Pager# 14463 
  • Pooled or 24 hour fecal specimens
  • Barium contamination, water or urine contamination

Collection:

Specimen: Random Stool.  Specimen must be liquid or loose and take the shape of the collection container.   See Bristol Stool Chart Type 6 and 7.
