Important Note

Fluids that have cells that cannot be fully evaluated by the hematology lab during cell count and differential will have cytology studies reflexed.

Collection:

Specimen: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

Container:

  • CSF sterile tube from LP kit
  • Sterile tube or Plain Red Top Tube with no clot activator. Do not use serum separator or clot activator tube.
  • Hematology should receive Tube #3 or #4

Volume: 3 mL; Minimum 0.5 mL

Stability:

Send specimen to Lab within 1 hour.

Turn Around Time (TAT):

STAT: 1 HOUR

Routine: 2 HOURS
