Collection:

Specimen:  Sterile Body Fluid, specify type (Abdomen, Amniotic, Ascites, Joints, Liver, Pancreas, Pericardial, Pleural, Peritoneal, Synovial, etc).  

This order is not for abscess material or drainage from devices.  

Container:  Bacterial blood culture bottles.  

This order is for sterile body fluids submitted in blood culture bottles only.

Volume:  5 mL; Minimum 1 mL. 5-10 mL in each Bacterial blood culture bottle.

Special instructions:  Specimen collected by physician.

If Sterile body fluid is submitted in a sterile container, other than blood culture bottles, order LAB2837 Bacterial Culture Routine.

If LAB250 Gram Stain is requested, submit additional fluid in sterile container.

Unacceptable/Rejected Specimens:  Specimens > 2 hrs old.
