Not intended for serum, plasma or urine.
Collection:
Specimen: Fluid (nasal, aural, others) – Specify fluid type on the lab request or electronic order.
Container: Plain or Sterile Container
Volume: Fluid – 1mL ; Minimum 0.075 mL. Fluid must be free-flowing. Mucoid or viscous fluids are unacceptable.
Storage Instructions:
Send specimen to Lab immediately or refrigerate until transport. Specimen is stable for 72 hours refrigerated.
Test Availability:
Testing is performed Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 1pm. Results for specimens received in lab by 1pm Monday – Friday will be available same day. If same day results are required on specimens received after 1pm Monday – Friday, weekends or holidays, the ordering physician/clinician must page the Pathology and Lab Medicine resident on call at 792-2123.

Interpretive Data:
The detection of beta-2-transferrin (B-2 TRF) by immunofixation electrophoresis suggests the presence of CSF. The lowest level of B-2 TRF detectable by our laboratory’s immunofixation method is 0.15 mg/dL or approximately 5% of the normal total TRF level in CSF. A “none detected” or “indeterminate” result does not exclude B-2 TRF. These terms mean that if B-2 TRF is present in the specimen, it is All results are reviewed by a Clinical Pathologist or a Clinical Chemistry Faculty member.
