Collection:

Specimen: Blood, CSF, Fluid. Also acceptable, Swab in Viral Transport Media.

Container:
Blood -White PPT - Plasma Preparation Tube (preferred)  or Lavender (EDTA) tube. A separate tube is required if multiple tests are ordered and collected in a lavender tube. Microtainers are discouraged, but if needed please send 2 full microtainers. 

CSF and Fluids- Sterile Container

Swab - Swab affected area (eye, throat, penis, vagina, rectum, and vesicles) and place swab in Viral Transport Media. Transport on cold pack or ice.  
 

Volume: 
Lavender/ PPT- 3 mL, minimum 1.0
CSF/Fluids- 2 mL, minimum 0.5

Pediatric Collection:

Two Lavender microtainers filled to 500 uL.

Storage Instructions:

Send specimen to Lab immediately after collection. Centrifuge PPT tube within 6 hours and refrigerate. If lavender tube is collected, centrifuge and pouroff plasma within 6 hours and ship on a cold pack by overnight delivery.  For longer storage >72 hours, freeze plasma and ship frozen on dry ice.   

 

Turnaround Time (TAT):

Reported same day as performed.

Test Availability:

Monday through Friday. Specimens must be in lab before 7:00 am for same day results. Observed holidays may adjust testing schedule.
